Summary of Position

As Software Engineer, you will play a vital role in building best-in-class school nutrition menu planning software. You will work closely with the team to architect, build, scale and optimize the product, while fostering a collaborative and creative work environment. You will primarily conduct back-end development and support the front-end developers via creating internal APIs. You will ensure our platform meets the highest standards of quality, performance, usability, and compliance that is crucial in delivering a product that empowers schools to enhance their meal planning processes and improve student health outcomes.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design & Development:  Architect, build, and maintain scalable web applications that support school nutrition menu planning. Developer server-side applications using modern PHP and Laravel.
  • Collaboration & Strategy:  Work closely with product owner/managers and company senior leadership to translate business and nutritional requirements into robust technical solutions, including defining best practices for development, deployment, and maintenance of software systems.  Participate in agile development processes, including sprint planning, daily scrums, and retrospectives.
  • API & Integration:  Design and implement RESTful APIs endpoints to integrate with third-party services and internal systems.  Ensure smooth data flow and interoperability across various components of the software.
  • Quality & Performance:  Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code with a focus on scalability, performance, and security.  Conduct code reviews, unit testing, and participate in continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices.  Optimize application performance and security to handle large datasets, such as extensive menu items, nutritional facts, and compliance data.
  • Innovation:  Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends, especially in the realm of educational and nutritional software, to drive continuous improvement and innovation.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education/Certifications:  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience:  4+ years of experience in software development.
  • Technical Skills: Strong back-end development skills with experience in one or more server-side languages/frameworks (e.g., PHP/Laravel, Node.js, Python, Ruby/Ruby On Rails, Java).  Preferred: PHP/Laravel.  Solid experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL).  Proven track record in designing and implementing RESTful APIs.  Knowledge of testing frameworks (PHPUnit, Jest, etc.).  Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is a plus.  Proficiency in front-end technologies (JavaScript/Typescript, HTML, CSS) and modern frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, or Vue) is a plus.
  • Organizational Skills:  Proven ability to organize and  manage multiple projects at a time while paying strict attention to detail.  Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, agile environment.  Must be a self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Communication:  Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
